How much does university really cost in England now?
When people talk about university costs, they usually start with tuition fees.

So the real cost of university is not just the official fee. It is the fee plus the practical cost of living.
University is often treated like a separate financial chapter that begins at 18. In reality, it is usually the final stage of a much longer education cost story. If a family has already absorbed years of childcare, school extras, tutoring or school fees, university can arrive at a point when finances already feel stretched.
This is why planning early helps, because it is easier to make calm decisions when you understand the likely shape of the cost. Which city is realistic. Whether rent support may be needed. What a maintenance shortfall might look like. Whether younger siblings are coming behind.
University still opens huge opportunities. But the financial side needs a realistic look, not just the standard line about tuition fees and loans.
